About the course

Most adults never get past the basics of money, and it costs them for decades. Our Advanced courses are the next step for students who have finished our foundational courses and are ready for college-level work. Students learn the ideas most people miss, avoid the expensive mistakes that hold families back for years, and learn to spot when so-called experts are giving incomplete or plainly wrong advice. Each course includes in-depth readings, demanding quizzes with full answer explanations, and a comprehensive 50-question final exam. Making a budget is easy. Being good at managing money is not. Advanced Budgeting skips the budgeting methods covered in our basic course and teaches what separates households that build wealth from households that just get by. Students start by learning to diagnose their financial health the way a professional would: building a cash-flow statement, tracking net worth, and measuring savings rate, the one number that predicts financial progress better than income. From there, they look at both sides of the ledger in depth. On the income side, students learn to judge a job by its total compensation, not just salary: valuing benefits, comparing job offers, calculating their true hourly wage, and managing irregular income with confidence. On the expense side, they learn to find the real cost of everyday decisions through total cost of ownership, opportunity cost, and the long-term weight of fixed commitments like housing and vehicles. The course then studies how wealthy households actually handle money: why a high income alone doesn't create wealth, how lifestyle creep traps people at every income level, and the systems disciplined families use so good decisions happen automatically. Finally, students look honestly at their own blind spots, the mental shortcuts that quietly wreck good plans, and learn to see through popular money advice that sounds wise but doesn't hold up. Students finish with more than a budget. They finish with the judgment to manage a household's money with confidence and the ability to explain why each decision is right.
